Katy Perry praat openlijk over geaardheid

Katy Perry kissed a girl and she liked it, dat weten we allemaal. Maar bij haar ontvangst van de National Equality Award op zaterdagavond bekent de zangeres dat ze wel meer dan dat heeft gedaan. Katy werd geprezen om haar werk als activist voor gelijke rechten voor de LGBTQ+ community op het Human Rights Campaign Gala in Los Angeles.

“I’m just a singer-songwriter, honestly. I speak my truths and I paint my fantasies into these little bite-size pop songs. For instance, I kissed a girl and I liked it. Truth be told, I did more than that,” Zei Perry tegen het publiek. De zangeres groeide op in een strenge, Christelijke familie en vond het moeilijk om haar eigen seksualiteit te ontdekken terwijl ze in jeugdgroepen werd gestopt die voor conversion therapy bedoeld waren: therapie om je geaardheid te veranderen of te laten houden op heteroseksueel.

Wat Katy wel wist, was dat ze nieuwsgierig was. ‘I knew sexuality wasn’t as black and white as this dress.” De zangeres geeft toe dat ze veel fouten heeft gemaakt, maar dat ‘I Kissed a Girl’ er zeker niet een van was. Het nummer zorgde voor veel commotie wat Katy als positief ervaart. ‘’A lot of the world seemed curious enough to sing along to it.’’

Opgroeiend in een Christelijke bubbel, maakte dat het ontmoeten van de mensen van LGBTQ+ iets heel nieuws was voor de zangeres. “These people were nothing like I had been taught to fear,” she said. “They were the most free, strong, kind and inclusive people I have ever met. They stimulated my mind, and they filled my heart with joy, and they danced with joy while doing it. These people are actually magic, and they are magic because they are living their truth.” Katy sloot haar empowering speech super krachtig af. “No longer can I sit in silence. I have to stand for what I know is true and that is equality and justice for all, period.” Aldus de zangeres.
